Abstract

This ethnography describes the ways the Guarani Mbya, an indigenous people living in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, discover, develop and communicate knowledge. Considering that it is through constant movement and communication among different places and people (human, divine and non-human) that the Guarani Mbya develop knowledge and make it flow, this research was carried out by following different individuals and families as they moved along relations and places. Attention is drawn to common and ritual acts of communication and translation, in which translation is not only performed in the linguistic sense, but also encompasses experiences in which knowledge is translated into powerful actions. The lengths to which the Guarani Mbya seek to control the flow of knowledge are addressed pointing to the close tie between knowledge and sickness/misfortune, as well as the possibility that one may transform into the other and vice versa. In fact, the Mbya person, as all persons, grows continuously, and such growth entails managing the desire and risks of transformations triggered by his/her engagement in different contexts of interaction. The issues addressed in this dissertation dialogue with amerindian ethnology in general, and venture into a potentially promising dialogue with problems prevailing in the fields of education and philosophy of language research.

História e forma em Ragtime, The Book of Daniel e Homer & Langley, de E. L. Doctorow

Abstract

The novels by E. L. Doctorow studied here draw a critically illuminating panorama of American History in the 20th century. In The Book of Daniel, we follow the trajectory of the American Left from the thirties up to the sixties.  In Ragtime, the historical scenery is the Belle Époque and the “Ragtime era”, from the beginning of the century up to World War I. In Homer & Langley, the time frame is broadened to include almost the entire century – from World War I up to de eighties. In those novels, we find a dialectical relationship between the impulse to bring forth connections and represent a larger social and historical picture, and the difficulty of achieving such a project through the very language and logic of fragmentation which obstructs the making of articulations and renders representation difficult. In this work, I try to read the ambiguities and hesitations of the form in those three novels as “productive uncertainties” – potential lessons to contemporary critical thinking. Novels such as RagtimeThe Book of Daniel e Homer & Langley are animated more by a hermeneutics of the concrete than by a poetics of relativity. The analysis of the representational strategies those novels employ to depict the historical material from which they are made shows how those narratives reinvigorate the historical novel today.

(1861), a Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça (1880), ambos de autoria de Luiz Gama, e Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), escrita por Frederick Douglass.

Abstract

In this work, we take as object of investigation the narratives of the abolitionists Luiz Gama (1830-1882), Brazilian, and Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), American. Thus, we intend to evidence the way as the linguistic and semiotic aspects are articulated in the processes of discursive projection of the self and discursive construction of identity, as well as to demonstrate the way each enunciator presents his discursive choices through the thematization and figurativization processes. So, one of our main intentions is to contribute to the expansion of theoretical and analytical visions and perspectives, on the narrative of ex-enslaved. Consequently, the theoretical framework of this work is Discursive Semiotics. This perspective takes into account the study, reflection and analysis of the internal structure of the text. Conceived as the general theory of signification, Semiotics is engaged in the processes of discursive articulation that promote the construction of the meaning effects of the texts. Therewith, the corpus selected for this research comprises the poem Quem sou eu? [Who am I?] (1861), Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça [Letter to Lúcio de Mendonça] (1880), both written by Luiz Gama, and Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), written by himself.

Abstract

This essay analyzes the role and the conceptual elaboration of the notions of “human labor”, “indolence” and “idleness” in Rousseau’s anthropology, addressing how it is possible to read the genesis of humankind and the genesis of history by examining the genesis of work. Furthermore, this research intends to assay how the development of different forms of work allows us to think labor in its distinct categories: Rousseau distinguishes and qualitatively describes several sorts of human labor, always regarding the heterogeneous elements that compose the successive stages of the historical state of nature. In the original state of nature portrayed in the Second Discourse, men found themselves scattered in a prodigal nature: living in a fertile and abundant land, where they could fully enjoy their natural indolence, individuals were similar to animals and men’s faculties lay dormant. In this generous environment, where just a minimum instinctual effort was required for survival, toil was inexistent. However, this model, in which laziness is a fundamental anthropological attribute that keeps men attached to its state of affairs, undergoes changes the moment where the obstacles arise: nature, becoming miser, starts to hide its fruits. Relinquishing its indolence, humankind develops a first form of labor and starts to build its firsts technical objects; at the same moment, freedom and perfectibility are developed, so men will truly have access to their humanity. Subsequently, we analyze, considering the development of human forms of labor, in which way men become self-aware and aware of their equals, triggering the development of history, reason and society. This work maintains that the notion of “human labor”, superseding the ‘paradisiac idleness’, plays a fundamental role in Rousseau’s anthropology.

Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the development of written production in French as a foreign language through the genre "travel journal", but trying to verify how students develop their language capacities from restrictions and liberties allowed by the chosen genre. Therefore, this research investigates how students appropriate the characteristics of the genre and shows how they insert marks of subjectivity that can be considered as stylistics. Data was collected in a writing course offered by Cultural and Extension Service French extracurricular courses, from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences, at the University of São Paulo. Students, ranging between levels A2 and B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CONSEIL DE L' EUROPE, 2001), were able to study three different textual genres, among them the travel journal. The theoretical framework that guided this research relies mainly on the theoretical assumptions of socio-discursive interactionism (BRONCKART, 1999/2009, 2006a, 2008; MACHADO, 2009) and the studies of Schneuwly and Dolz (2004/2010) on the use of textual genres as a tool for teaching and learning that can help student develop their language capacities: action capacity, discursive capacity, and linguistic-discursive capacity. To achieve our specific goals, we rely in parallel on the discussions about style (BRONCKART, 1999/2009, 2006c; SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2004/2010; BAKHTIN, 1997; CLOT, 2007; BRANDÃO, 2005a, 2005b; BRAIT, 2005), but mainly on the discussion of textual constraints and liberties by Bronckart (2006c). In order to analyze the texts collected, we use not only the theoretical and methodological framework proposed by Bronckart (1999/2009, 2006a), but also the studies from Kerbrat-Orecchioni (2002) and Maingueneau (2001) with regard to subjectivity marks in the texts. Based on authors who study the function of textual genres in teaching (SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2004/2010; DOLZ; GAGNON; TOULOU, 2008; LOUSADA, 2002/2010, 2009, 2010; CRISTOVÃO, 2002/2010, 2009), we built the didactic model of the textual genre travel journal, developed a didactic sequence (DS), and applied it in the context mentioned before. Activities were proposed in the first two modules of the DS that focused on the most stable features of the genre. After these modules, an intermediate production was required from students intending to check if they had mobilized essential language capacities for the production of this genre. In the third module we selected a text with the aim of exploring textual liberties exercised by its producer. The results of our research showed that a genre-based perspective is a potential tool for developing students’ language capacities in a foreign language. As we focused on style in texts, students mobilized less canonical discursive and linguistic resources in their final productions inspired by texts from the class, thus establishing a relationship of inter-textuality with the texts of the DS. In addition, demonstrating the dialogic nature of style some students also made use of inter-text, which may indicate the development of autonomy in writing. In short, our didactic proposal confirms Bronckart (2006c) statement: preexisting models are the first condition for the exercise of liberty in texts.

Abstract

This thesis aims to contribute to the comprehension of the social organization of the production of cultural and artistic goods/services. Considering as a target the cinematographic production that has been characterized as the "novíssimo cinema brasileiro" ("brand new" Brazilian cinema, in reference to Brazilian 1960's "new wave", meaning a production made by young filmmakers with low budgets and less specialized and hierarchical organizational structures, which begins to get organized in early 2000 and gain public national recognition by the end of 21st century's first decade), this thesis is developed based on two goals. The first is to comprehend "novíssimo" cinema taking into account the positioning the filmmakers occupy in the larger Brazilian cinema field, which triggers a set of specific practices and representations. The second goal is to bring elements that contribute to the discussion of cultural/artistic productions known as 'independent' – from the observation of the cinema case, we seek to build a category of independence that can be used for understanding other contexts of symbolic production.

Abstract

Chileans, a population used to earthquakes, woke up with surprise in the morning of February 27th, 2010 since right after the earthquake that hit Concepción, the third largest metropolitan area in the country, massive looting to stores came about. Fed by rumors about roving mobs, Concepcion residents formed their own neighborhood defense squads to guard their homes, whereas the Chilean government declared State of Exception to restore the social order. Drawing on testimonies of men and women I interviewed in Concepción two years after the disaster, this exploratory and qualitative research examines the relationship between earthquake, collective violence, and urban insecurity. Following a theoretical discussion about collective memories, I explore how silence and forgetting are active elements in the process of collective remembering. In addition, this project analyzes the sense of exceptionality that my interviewees, other scholars, and state authorities have assigned to looting in the aftermath of the earthquake; events that, as I shall demonstrate, were interpreted as a symptom of moral decadence of Chilean society under the neoliberal regime. By scrutinizing historical data about past earthquakes, I look at traces of social and political conflicts associated with the occurrence of natural disaster like the one I describe here. Concerning the 2010 facts, I make use of the framework offered by Charles Tilly and Javier Auyero to present, at a micro-scale level, looting targets, dynamics and repertoires based on narratives collected empirically (among them, testimonies of storeowners who were victimized by the crowd). Finally, to explore the displacement of fear—in particular, from the fear to earthquake to the fear of the “others”—I point out the need to pay attention to the ways in which different neighborhoods are conceived of as well as the role of rumors.

Abstract

The aim of our research was to explore the implications related to the use of Free Virtual Educati- onal Materials in the context of formal teaching and learning Italian as FL/SL. The implications were dealt as Problems of Teaching (ORTALE,2010) and the term use was considered according to two aspects: use in presential classrooms and production. The hypothesis was that the use of Free Virtual Educational Materials, in the context of formal teaching and learning Italian as FL/SL, triggers a series of observable and specific implications, which can be defined in terms of Problems of Teaching due to its peculiar nature, that is, being a free educational material. The methodology adopted here was qualitative, both constructivist and interpretativist. The Problems of Teaching were identified through the analysis of the Reports of Problems of Teaching (ORTALE,2010). The analyses were based on the methodology of teacher education, supported by the idea of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), explained inOrtale(2010), and the techniques and procedures of the Grounded Theory, according toStrauss e Corbin(2008). The Problems of Teaching related to the use were investigated in two undergraduate subjects of Italian Language offered by the College of Arts in a public university in São Paulo state. The Problems of Teaching related to the production were researched in the context of two editions of the training course for teachers of Italian Language in-service and pre-service, taught at two Brazilian public universities – one in Santa Catarina state and the other in São Paulo state. We have found the total of 11 (eleven) Problems of Teaching – 7 (seven) related to the aspect of production of Free Virtual Educational Materials and 4 (four) related to the aspect of its use. We have noticed through our analysis, the prominence of two factors associated to the Problems of Teaching which were found in the research: the beliefs regarding Free Virtual Educational Materials and the demand to develop the competences related to the free and virtual aspects of this sort of material. We concluded that the Problems of Teaching identified here are not specific but are typical of educational materials that are virtual and free.

Abstract

In this thesis I shall investigate the implications of the consistent use Pindar and Bacchylides make of the term κῶμος to the occasion of the performance of the epinikia. I shall argue, from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics, that, through the analysis of the relevant passages in Greek literature from Homer to the V century drama, the term always implies some sort celebration, either mobile or not, and that it is never used to denote either ‘song’ or ‘chorus’. Most importantly I shall argue that κῶμος implies aframe in an Idealized Cognitive Model for victory celebration within which references to the victory ode must be understood. Based on this, I shall discuss the implications of these results and try to reexamine the assumption, now generally held as unproblematic, that victory odes were always performed chorally on its premiere. Additionally I shall also discuss the problems of identifying the persona loquens in the poems and I shall propose that in most cases it never seems to refer to a chorus. Finally, I shall discuss some scenarios of transmission of the odes, proposing that writing needs not be assumed for the transmission of the text until a fairly late date and that a continuous tradition of oral reperformances must have played an essential role in the preservation of the text.
